Sun all year round, enchanting beaches, crystal-clear water, vibrant nightlife and 7,000 years of fascinating history – there is so much to experience on the Maltese archipelago, which lies in the centre of the Mediterranean: 93 kilometres south of Sicily and 288 kilometres north of Africa. The diverse holiday destination consists of the three islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. 400,000 inhabitants live on 316 square kilometres. Malta, the largest of the islands, is the cultural and economic centre with its capital Valletta. The smaller sister island of Gozo is more rural with fishing, agriculture, tourism and handicrafts. Comino is unpopulated. Among the appealing sights are the world-famous Hypogeum (UNESCO), prehistoric temples, stately Baroque palaces and Renaissance cathedrals. The landscape is covered with the oldest known human constructions in the world and is rightly described as an open-air museum. Megaliths, medieval dungeons and the Cave of Calypso epitomise legend and adventure. The different nationalities that have occupied Malta over the centuries have led to a fascinating fusion of styles and traditions. Beyond the towns and villages, hiking trails impressively combine nature and history. Everywhere they lead to historical sites or to the sea, where new experiences await: paddleboarding or kayaking or diving into an underwater paradise that is one of the most beautiful diving areas in the world.
